Indian Hill is a community dedicated to preserving its forests and fields, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the Greenacres Foundation. From the moment you arrive at Greenacres, you can tell you’re in a very special place steeped in heritage that offers everyone the chance immerse themselves in the arts and nature.
Greenacres Foundation includes farmland, creeks and forests, educational programs for children, an equine center, an excellent farm store, and an arts center where concerts for the public and classes for children are held. It’s not just one of the most beautiful tranquil places in Indian Hill, but perhaps one of the most beautiful places in Cincinnati, as well (brides-to-be: it’s also a fabulous place for a wedding).
The History of Greenacres
Louis and Louise Nippert established Greenacres Foundation in 1988 on land they purchased from the Green family in 1949. Over the years, leading up to opening the foundation, they purchased nearly 600 additional acres that they eventually decided to preserve and make accessible to the community. Today, Greenacres Foundation serves more than 30,000 students every year.
Supporting the arts
The Greenacres Arts Center is an historic stone building that was renovated to accommodate concerts, art exhibits and other cultural and artistic events. Not only is it impressive on the inside, but it’s also surrounded by beauty outside, thanks to flower beds, the surrounding woodlands and a babbling stream.
The arts center also features a large art studio with plenty of natural light, tables, art supplies and pottery equipment. It offers a variety of art classes for children and young adults, and regularly hosts concerts by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and other well-known music groups.
Dedicated to sustainable farming
At the core of Greenacres farm is its dedication to using environmentally sensitive farming techniques. Sustainability is as important at Greenacres now as it was when Louis Nippert started the farm and converted it from growing grain to raising cattle.
Today the farm offers field trips for students where they can learn about sustainable, environmentally sound farming. The farm store is open to the public five days a week and sells everything from eggs to flowers, meats to vegetables.
The Greenacres Equine Center
What child doesn’t love horses? At the Greenacres Equine Center, children can take classes and learn how to ride without needing to own a horse. As an official United State Pony Club Riding Center, the equine center focuses on teaching students everything from learning how to care for horses to proper riding techniques and horse handling. The center also offers classes to the community about equine science and husbandry.
