How to design a child’s bedroom they’ll love!
Creating a fantastic children’s bedroom is all about balance. Not only is this the place where your child will get a good night’s sleep, it’s also where they’ll go to play, and where they may study, too.
Since it’s an important room that serves so many purposes, you’re going to want to work with your custom home builder to design a space that’s as unique (and wonderful, of course!) as your children themselves.
As for decorating the kids’ room, make sure it’s functional and that it can grow along with your child. You shouldn’t have to go back to the drawing board every time your child has a growth spurt. The room should be just as inviting and comfortable for them when they’re ten as they are when they’re fifteen.
Keep it simple
If you’re tempted to create a Star Wars or Frozen themed kids’ room, put on the breaks. Your child’s interests change quickly, and a year from now they may not be excited about the same things. Rather than incorporating themes into your overall design, choose themed bedding, rugs and other décor elements like posters for all that your child loves.
Storage, storage and more storage
Your kids’ room should feature plenty of storage areas including a large closet, cubbies, shelves and hooks for hanging items like bookbags and hats. We recommend custom storage solutions that can accentuate the look of the room and create more space. Ideally, you’ll have enough storage to keep the room clutter free.
Add a study nook
Nothing you can do will make your child look forward to doing their homework, but you can make it a lot more enjoyable with a light-filled space dedicated to studying. Make it comfy and cozy by adding a window bench with pillows where they can relax and read. And include an ergonomic desk, as well as plenty of colored pencil and markers and other art supplies so they can get creative, too.
Don’t forget about the walls
From a giant chalkboard to a climbing wall, there are all sorts of ways to transform a wall in your children’s room into something pretty sweet. Chalkboard paint is inexpensive and easy to apply to walls. It also comes in a variety of colors (although we’re partial to the old school aesthetic).
Climbing walls are a great option for kids who love to be active and they’re easy to install, just remember to have a padded area where they can land safely.
Choose colors carefully
Vibrant colors like bold yellows and blues may seem great for kids’ rooms, but when it comes to painting the walls, we recommend a more subtle color for two reasons.
First, colors like a paler blue or a soft green are soothing, and if you’ve ever tried to get a child to go to sleep at bedtime, you know sometimes you need all the help you can get.
Also, bold paint colors require several coats and when it comes time to paint the walls again, it can be a time-consuming process because you’ll need to prime the walls with a few coats of paint first.
Choose multifunctional furniture
Kids furniture can serve a few purposes. Collapsible dollhouse chairs can be used as a storage unit, for example. Children’s beds can also double as storage space and many come with drawers and other built in features. Many of these furniture types are modular and can evolve as your kids grow.
