This is an exciting time in custom home building. The past couple of years have shown us that there really is no place like home. It’s our haven, our sanctuary. We’re entertaining more in our homes, spending more evenings in for movie nights, and for many of us, our home is where we work, too.
Last year, luxury master suites and bathrooms topped our list of trends, and they’re still just as popular. (But then, who doesn’t want a beautiful place to retreat to at the end of a long day?) This year, get ready for modern architecture, fabulous entertainment rooms, and surprise nooks.
As always, we chose trends that are here to stay. Here’s what we’re excited for in home design in 2022.
Modern aesthetics
From soaring windows that let in the light (and amazing views) to materials and design that give a strong nod to nature, modern custom homes are undoubtedly sophisticated. Look for more contemporary custom homes in the near future, as more people are choosing open floor plans, clean lines and a balance between ease and elegance.
Amazing home offices
The pandemic truly changed the way we work. Today, perhaps now more than ever, a space dedicated to working from home is essential. But a great office is more than just a room with a good desk and a bookshelf or two. They also require great natural light, a way to filter outside noise, and yes, even a place for those Zoom meetings.
Home offices can also double as media rooms, a study for those who are in school, a media library or a modern traditional library.
Full ensuites
We’ve watched the master bedroom go through various reinventions over the years. In fact, some custom homes now feature two (who says you can only have one?). The latest trend is to create an ensuite with full bathroom. This is a practical choice for anyone who welcomes overnight guests or grown children who visit with their kids. And yes, we’re also building many ensures that feature a small kitchen area, too.
Pet stations
Dog owners, this one is for you. If you’ve ever tried to wash your dog (emphasis on tried) in the bathtub, you know what a bad idea this can turn out to be. Even if your dog is okay at bath time, you’ll be left with water on the floor and dog hair in drain. Not good.
Pet washing stations are an excellent addition for you and your pup (especially if they’re seniors). They’re also relatively simple to install. Here’s where we might also suggest including a mudroom in your custom home. Mudrooms made out list of top trends in 2021, but these practical spaces never go out of style.

Butler’s pantries
Eye-catching kitchen hood features? Gorgeous ceramic tile floors? It was tough to choose this year’s top kitchen design trend, but the one that stands out the most to us is (drumroll, please) – butler’s pantries.
Today’s kitchen pantries have been reimagined. They still feature plenty of space for food, spices, and pots and pans, but now they can also include custom storage, lighted cabinetry, drop-in sinks, and a great prep station to create the perfect segue between the kitchen and dining area.
State-of-the-art entertainment rooms
The more Netflix movies get nominated for Academy Awards, the clearer it’s becoming that home entertainment is here to stay in a big way. While entertainment and recreation rooms have always been integral in a lot of homes we’ve designed, they’re moving onto the “must-have” list now more than ever before.
Entertainment rooms often feature state-of-the-art technology for movie watching and listening to music, as well as a kitchen area and a dedicated space for dining. Many also include a bar area with kegerators and refrigeration.
Detailed ceilings
Don’t forget to think upwards. Today, ceilings are playing a big role in design. Think wood or metal beams on vaulted ceilings, detailed, carved woodwork on ceilings, unique pendant lighting and gorgeous chandeliers.

Arched doorways
If you’ve been seeing more arched doorways and windows, it’s because they’re on trend right now. Like the butler’s pantry, arched features are a classic. Even though they’re experiencing a resurgence, they’ve never gone out of style. Consider adding arches to exterior design elements, as well as interior arched doorways – and cabinetry, too.
Surprise nooks
From a cozy breakfast nook to a hideaway for reading, nooks are a great way to add something unique to your home. Love to cook? How about a small area in the kitchen for cookbooks and a comfy chair for reading recipes and planning your next feast? Are you a music buff? Maybe choose a small nook for your albums and listening to tunes?
Whatever you decide to include in your custom home, we’re here to make it beautiful. Great living never goes out of style. Let the team at Classic Living Homes create a house for you that you’ll be proud to call “home, sweet home” for years to come.
